Jacked Southern BBQ on a Bun

By August 30, 2018 No Comments

Step aside pulled pork… Jack’s in town.

I have had so many unsuspecting guests whispering, “wow, Shelley made pulled pork?”.

Nope!

It’s all about shredded jackfruit cooked in delicious BBQ sauce for the vegan win.

This Jacked Southern BBQ on a bun recipe is easy, delicious and nutritious.

I first came across Jackfruit when I lived in Asia. Canned jackfruit is sold two ways; young and ripe. Ripe jackfruit is super sweet with a hint of Juicy Fruit flavour.

Young jackfruit is essentially flavourless and takes on whatever flavours you like.  I also use young jackfruit in my fysh cakes because it can be shredded into a tuna like consistency.

Have fun with it and try different brands of BBQ sauce or heck, even better, feature your own sauce.

If I’m having a big crowd, I offer two options one with spicy BBQ sauce BBQ and one with sweet BBQ.

Pickles or sauerkraut are perfect toppings.

Big overflowing buns or little sliders, either way, this recipe super popular.

Ingredients

Jacked Southern BBQ on a Bun

  • 1 can Young Jackfruit packed in water or brine Be sure it's young Jackfruit. Ripe jackfruit is super sweet and meant for desserts
  • 1 jar BBQ Sauce

Instructions

Preparing the Jackfruit

  1. Drain the jackfruit.

Some canned Jackfruit have tough stems that need to be cut off.  Jackfruit pieces are triangular and the stem is generally on the narrow end.

If you use a good quality canned Jackfruit like Native Forest Organic Young Jackfruit you won't need to trim the stems.

Steam jackfruit in pressure cooker with 1 cup water for 12 minutes or cook stovetop in 1 cup water for 20 minutes or until tender.

Pulse until the jackfruit is a shredded consistency.

    Can of young jackfruit

Creating the Jacked Southern BBQ

  1. In a medium pot heat the shredded Jackfruit and BBQ sauce on medium-low for about 30 minutes or until Jackfruit is very tender.

Pile the jackfruit and sauerkraut on your favourite buns and enjoy!

  2. This sandwich is perfect for buffets, on sliders for appetizers as well as backyard BBQs.
